A weakened, bulging area in a blood vessel wall. Microaneurysms - tiny outpouchings in retinal capillaries - are the earliest sign of diabetic retinopathy.

Where this term comes up

  • It can result from age-related stretching of eyelid tissues, but sudden or variable ptosis can also reflect a nerve problem, myasthenia gravis, or rarely an aneurysm that needs emergency imaging.

  • Common causes include tumors, aneurysms, and enlarged muscles (as in thyroid eye disease).
