First Visit

What to bring

Bring the records and everyday vision items that help the doctors understand your full eye and medical history.

  • Photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport
  • Medical and vision insurance cards, if applicable
  • Current medication list with dosages
  • Prior records, imaging, MRI or CT discs or links, visual field tests, and OCT reports
  • Referral paperwork from your doctor, if one was provided
  • Current glasses, contact lenses, and any eye drops you use

What to Expect

Your appointment flow

Arrive 15 minutes early so the visit can start smoothly.

Expect a detailed medical history review, eye examination, and discussion of findings.

Neuro-ophthalmology evaluations may take 60 to 90 minutes because they often require more testing.

Your pupils may be dilated, so bring sunglasses and consider arranging a ride home.

Insurance and Location

Before you come in

Neuro-ophthalmology visits are generally handled through medical insurance rather than routine vision benefits. Please contact the office before your visit so the team can help verify your plan.

Insurance

Have your insurance cards ready when scheduling. If your plan requires referral paperwork, bring it with you or send it before the appointment.

Parking

The parking entrance is behind the building on Rubio St. Parking is $10 per hour; ask the front desk to stamp your ticket for 50% off.

Cataract Surgery Preparation

Your pre-surgery checklist

Surgery information on this page applies to cataract surgery. Use this checklist before your procedure, and follow any personalized instructions from our office or the surgery center.

  1. 1 week before

    Prepare your eyelids

    Stop wearing eye makeup. Wash your eyelids and eyelashes every night with baby shampoo.

  2. Before surgery

    Confirm pre-op clearance

    Make sure your primary care doctor sends your history and physical, blood work, and EKG to our office.

  3. Before surgery

    Arrange transportation

    Coordinate drop-off and pickup with a friend or family member. You cannot drive on surgery day.

  4. 2 days before

    Start your eye drops

    You will receive eye drops from our office. Start using them 2 days before surgery, following the instructions provided with them.

  5. Night before

    Follow fasting instructions

    Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery.

  6. Day of surgery

    Shower before arrival

    Shower before your surgery and arrive with a clean face and eyelids.

After Cataract Surgery

Cataract recovery basics

Your cataract surgery instructions take priority. Use this as a practical reminder for the common recovery themes our team may review with you.

Follow your cataract care plan

  • Use all post-operative cataract drops exactly as directed.
  • Wear any shield, patch, or protective glasses if your surgical team provides them.
  • Do not rub, press on, or touch the operated eye unless instructed.
  • Avoid swimming, heavy lifting, eye makeup, and strenuous activity until you are cleared.
  • Keep every follow-up visit so your surgeon can confirm the eye is healing correctly.

Call right away for

  • Vision loss or sudden worsening vision
  • Pain that does not improve with the medication you were told to use
  • Increasing redness, eyelid swelling, discharge, or crusting
  • New flashes of light, many new floaters, or a curtain-like shadow
